What lies beneath
Gloucester Cathedral?
According to local
paper, the Gloucester Citizen “a team full of Indiana Jones-esque
archaeologists will be descending on the city tomorrow, Thursday”. Presumably complete with leather jackets,
hats and horse whips – which may be the uniform of Border Archaeology Ltd – or just
an ill-informed joke by journalists (who, themselves wear trilby hats, slightly
grubby rain coats, sport little round glasses and occasionally undress in phone
boxes)!
The archaeologists are working
in advance of the beginning of Project Pilgrim which is the name of the New
Cathedral Green development programme to the south of the cathedral.
Digging will reveal
whether or not there is there is anything of significance that could be disturbed
by the development. Finds are likely as
this area served as a cemetery during the monastic period and indeed until a
couple hundred years ago.
