"Witch Girl" exhumed in Italy

Courtesy to Pontifical Institute of Archaeology

The skeleton of a young girl has been disinterred in San Calocero, Italy, and is believed to have been accused as a witch before she was murdered.

The girl - whom scientists determined was severely malnourished at the time of her death, and between the ages of 14-17 - was buried under stone slabs.

The finding was made by Philippe Pergola of the Pontifical Institute of Archaeology and his team, following a like discovery close to the site two years ago of an original "witch girl" who was also malnourished. Both girls are believed to have been the victims of the same macabre ritual.

The burial of the condemned girls - while they were possibly still alive - may have followed such tribulations as burning and being swung by the elbows. The fact that the recovered body's head was almost touching its breastbone suggests that the girl may have also been thrown into the pit.

Both skeletons are dated between the ninth and fifteenth centuries, when suspicion of witchcraft was a fixture of life in parts of the continent.

Nexus Heritage and the Maesbury Marsh archaeological dig

The Canal and River Trust is working with specialists from Nexus Heritage, at the historic canal wharf, smelting house and bone manure works at Maesbury Marsh, near Oswestry in what is billed as a Time Team-style archaeological dig.

It is hoped that dozens of would-be archaeologists will take part in a community excavation of this important historical canal site from Tuesday 21 – Sunday 26 April.  [Sorry that my notification is a little late!]

Everyone's invited to inspect the work at a special open day on Saturday 25 April, 11am – 3pm. You'll be able to speak to the archaeologists and see what treasures have been unearthed. You're also invited to add to the unfolding story by bringing old photographs or memorabilia of the canal wharf to the event.   From the twitter feed, it looks as if this is very successful and enjoyable so far!

“Nexus Heritage is a dynamic and energetic team of heritage professionals with a wide range of expertise and experience. We believe that we can build a better future by inspiring people around the world to value the past. We are founded on a belief in working collaboratively with our clients and other stakeholders. Some absolutely fantastic post war buildings have just received their Grade II listing

The hanging gardens of Basingstoke is such a fantastic description of Mountbatten House.  Somehow I always think it looks wrong – as if nature is encroaching on the concrete jungle.  As for 30 Cannon Street, that has always struck me as a ‘flight of fancy’ – or something from a cartoon – driving up Cannon Street.  Fantastic!  All built in the late 1960s and the 1970s – in a way, it is amazing that any are still standing given ‘concrete cancer’ and general buidling techniques in the day.

Alpha Tower in Birmingham is also great isn’t it?  A mad, modernist sail-like block that looks as if it just shouldn’t be there!

I hope that you enjoy the pictures as much as I did – really interesting stuff and great news that English Heritage is able to be so ‘un-stuffy’ and forward thinking in their assighments.

I have struggled to give names and descriptions to the photos below, but they give you a flavour of the buildings - best thing to do is look online at:

Are these the final written words of a doomed Spitfire pilot at the former RAF Coltishall base?

An inscription on a brick in an air raid shelter at the former RAF Coltisahll, which reads “N 194”. Archaeologists have interpreted it as the last letter of someone’s initials and a date in the 1940s.

Insurance for Expensive Archaeological Equipment On-Site

Insurers clearly don't like to provide cover against theft for equipment stored in a site hut or even in a site tent!  However, by taking some basic security precautions, cover can be extended to larger items like sieves such as this RGC Sieve Grader:

 R.G.C Sieve Grader

By locking the sieve to ground anchors, this client was able to get insurance cover for this expensive piece of kit.  The insurance included cover against theft while the site was unattended overnight.
